SEAT IN LORDS.
Archbishop To Become Temporal
Peer.
BARONY FOE, DR. DAVIDSON.
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, November 4,
King George has approved that a barony be conferred upon Dr. Randal! Davidson, the Archbishop of Canterbury and Primate of All England, on the occasion of his resignation. The retiring archbishop will thus retain the seat in the House of Lords which he has occupied as a Spiritual Peer by virtue of his ecclesiastical office. He has always made valuable contributions to the debates upon Church and social matters.
This is the first occasion on which any archbishop has become a temporal peer. The Archbishops of Canterbury have, however, generally died in office. This was the case with Dr. Davidson's immediate predecessors in the archbishopric, Dr. A. C. Tait, Dr. E. W. Benson and Dr. Frederick Temple.
