THE MELBOURNE CUP.
TO BE RUN TO-MORROW.
STREPHON WILL BE IN FAVOUR.
The Melbourne Cup will be decided to-morrow at Fleniington and after his win in the V.R.C. Derby, Strephon is bound to be one of the best backed candidates. Winalot showed good form as a three-year-old last season, even though he failed in the last Melbourne Cup. This season he performed consistently at the A.J.C. spring meeting, being second in the Spring Stakes to Limerick and second to Bacchus in the Randwick Plate. However he .ias 9.4 to carry, which is a good horse's weight. The Banker has not got , a great deal to commend him since going to Australia, but Textile won the C'aulfield Cup last season. Maple was second in the Herbert Power Stakes to Strephon and. later won the Caulfield Cup. Bacchus accounted for the Randwick Plate at the A.J.C. spring meeting. Statesman is a useful sort, while Strephon, after winning the Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield, and the V.R.C. Derby on Saturday, is sure to go out favourite. Other three-year-olds that have been in the limelight recently are Ramuluin, Oatendale and Balmerino.
