ORCHIDS OF THE AMAZON.
Dr. Cecil S. Garnett, the horticultural scientist, was a passenger on the Booth line Hildebrand, which left Liverpool for the Amazon. He is going as leader of what is termed the Orchidological R' search Expedition at the instance of some societies and persons interested in orchid growth. Dr. Garnett said that he proposed to travel in the Hildebrand to Manaos, 1000 miles up the Amazon, and then his party would take canoes and go about 1000 miles farther up the river towards Venezuela. They hoped to find probably fifty different new kiu.l > of orchids. Rather a peculiar type of orchid was found in the jungle. There were some which were not in great deband horticulturally but which were I nevertheless very interesting scientifically. The best and most valuable orchids were found growing on the tops of trees at least 100 ft high. He hoped to bring back with him about 1000 plants.
