VICTORIA LEAGUE "AT HOME."
An "At Home" was held in the League Rooms, Shortland Street, on Thursday, when a large number of members were present to welcome Mrs. Hugh Thomson on her return from a trip Home. Several speeches were made, and there was also a display of some of the parcels of books and magazines made up by the literature and education committee for the backblocks schools and farmers, and also some of the work done by the girls' committee sewing circle for the poor of Auckland and the backblocks. Miss Mowbray, after welcoming back Mrs. Thomson, spoke on the general work done by the various committees, and especially mentioned the fact that all the money earned by the sale of the cookery books (£IOOO to date) was spent on local charities of Auckland, the Victoria League itself not benefiting in any way. Mrs. Thomson thanked Miss Mowbray and the members for their welcome, and told of ' the great hospitality extended to her by the Victoria League at Home, and what a boon it is for members who are visiting London. Mrs. Rickerby, on behalf of the everready committee, also welcomed Mrs. Thomson. Miss Keesing spoke on the splendid work done by the graves committee since its inception, and how it was the Victoria League who urged the Government to look after the neglected soldiers' graves. The Government contributed £1000 towards the erection of the monument in Symonds Street in memory of the soldiers, sailors and friendly natives who gave their lives during the New Zealand wars. Miss Adkins added to the enjoyment of the afternoon by giving some enjoyable recitations. During the afternoon feeling reference was made to the loss the League had sustained in the death of Mrs. Hadfield. A resolution of sympathy was passed, all members standing.
