OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

PAEROA, Friday.

A meeting o£ the Ohinemuri County Council was presided over by Mr. H. 11. Corbet. The Under-Secretary of Mines Department wrote offering a grant of £60 towards the cost of putting a new crate across the Maratoto stream below the ford and piling rocks on the upper side of the track- across the ford, which would preserve access to the Ohinemuri Gold and Silver Mines Company's battery in the event of a further flood- It was understood that a Public Works Department vote of £200 was available for Maratoto Road, and it was suggested that the council should approach the Public Works Department to have the whole or portion of that sum expended at the washout. The engineer (Mr. L. E. Shaw) disagreed with the idea of the crate, as the road at this point was only a little above the stream level, and in the event of flooding the tendency would be for the creek •to change its course down the road. He considered that the £60 offered by the Mines Department would be more advantageously spent higher up the stream, where it was intended to make the permanent road. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the engineer, to prepare plans for the expenditure of the money. At the instance of the Waihi branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union the engineer was instructed to report on metalling portion of Trig Road and the worst portions of Waihi —Whangamata Road. A resolution "was passed agreeing to the closing of a road —the site of the old tramline—through Mrs. J. Angle's property in section 19, block XII. The i engineer reported that owing to the | weather conditions little prgorass had been J made with the metalling of roads. A 12in. j culvert on the main Te Aroha Road had been replaced with 2ft pipes, and the contractor had made a start on the old Te Aroha Road deviation, but had made ! little headway on account of the wet weather. In the Waikino riding, the dam and reservoir had been cleaned out and a new grating put in at the dam. The placing of the new 6in. pipes to repair the damaged main was completed, with the exception of the portion over the trestles near the dam which was damaged by fire last summer. It had been thought that if this portion of the main was given a coating of tar the pipes would stand for some time, but with the closing of all the breaks in the pipe-line the burnt pipes were found to be leaking and will require to be replaced with six lengths of new pipe. The water supply committee visited the proposed headworks at Green's Creek of the additional supply for Paeroa, and of the two sites suggested the lower one was decided on. Plans and speciScations of the new dam had been prepared, and tenders for construction would be called I this week.
