RACING NEWS.

DARGAVILLE CLUB.

SUCCESSFUL AVONDALE DEBUT.

ROYAL DOULTON'S CUP.

LADY'S BOY BEATS AUSSIE

Ideal conditions prevailed yesterday for the opening of the Dnrgavillo Racing Club's annual meeting, which by permission of the Avondnlc Jockey Club ie lx-ing held on the suburban course. The Northern Walroa people certainly have nothing to complain about in the matter of investments, as the £2:5,409 handled at Avondale was £1.">,100 in excess of tlio £8399 put through at Dargaville on th« corresponding day last year. The ciirlipr winners were Fcniden and Big Bertha (divisions of the Maiden Plate), Catapult (Tokatoka Handicap),Mangani (Hurdles) and Carl Idem (Nursery).

Big Race. All went to the post for the Durguvillo Cup, and the useful iield of eleven jjnve backers a wide opportunity to bet. Tlio wind-up saw Desert Glow favourite with £697, with Valkon £606, second rhoiVe, and good money for Papatu and Golden Wedding. The "winner turned up in the Pukekohe trained Royal Doulton, seventh in the betting, who was first out of the barrier, but was steadied, and afterwards ran along in third or fourth position, being third 'nto the straight, when she came along to win rather cusily by a couple of lengths. It was an impressive performance on her partAfter Royal Doulton had been steadied in the early part, Sir Russell took up the running, and led along the back from Valkon, Papatn, Master Doon. Desert Glow, Royal Doulton, Sir Archie, and Mint Leaf. Golden Wedding made a forward move, and ran up to fifth position, while Papatu dropped back, and as they came across the top towards the home turn, Sir Russell was still allowing the way to Valkon, Royal Doulton, Desert Glow, Golden Wedding, Mint Leaf and Master Doon. Sir Russell turned for home in the lead, but once straightened up for the run to the judge ho faded out. Royal Doulton dashed to the front then from Valkon, Desert Glow and Golden Wedding, with Papatu and Mint Leaf making a move. Royal Doulton was too good over the lust furlong, and she won well by two lengths from Papatu, who held Mint Leaf off to get second money by a head. Desert Glow wae a good fourth, and then came Valkdn, Alonsea, Sir Archie, Golden Wedding, Thursby, Master Doon, and Sir Russell, who led into the straight, was last.

The Second Leg. Despite his big impost, the brilliant sprinter Aussie made a bold bid to win tlie Avoca Handicap, but he found the task of giving 331b to the netful Lady's Boy too much for him, and he went under to the Wanganui-trained gelding by a couple of lengths. Aussie was a good favourite, and when tho tote closed had £751 on his chance. Flying Juliet was second pick, with £341, while The Begum carried £324, the winner, Lady's Boy, being fifth choice with £225. Billikins was out first from Yaqui, Serang, The Lamb and Scat, but with the exception of Billikins the others mentioned soon lost their position?, and at the end of two furlongs The Begum was following Billikine, while Oration, Aussie, The Lamb and Lady's Boy were the other* prominent. At this stage Flying Juliet was tailing the field along. Billikins continued to make play in front to tho Lome turn, where The Begum was close on hie trail, Aussie now being up third, just in front of Oration, The Lamb, Lady's Boy and Plying Juliet. Once straightened up for the run to the box, Lady's Boy came very fast, and, gathering up the leaders, he won easily by two lengths from Aussie, who beat Oration by * similar distance. Hyde Park was first neon then, when he finished fourth, he eonihts? from a long way back, and behind him in order were Flying Juliet, Scat, Billikins and The Lamb.

Tidal at Last. A fine performance was put up by the French-bred Tidal in the Awakino Handicap, when he gave the leading division a big start into the straight an-1 thnn galloped past and away from them at the end. The whole of the 13 acceptors went to the post, most money, coming for War Officer, and he wound up favour" It© with £575. The winner was second choice with £563, and next best backed was Eager Rose, £300.

Princess Rain was left at the barrier nnd took no part in the race. Bizarro was the first out from Eager Rose, Template, Naasock, Respirator and Salamander. Except that Glenstar had put In a run and reached fourth place crossing the top there were no alterations in the positions, and Bizarro and Eager Rose turned into the straight together. Nassock was just behind them with Template next, and Tidal putting in good work from a long way back. In the stniifjht Tidal put in some long strides and, gathering up the leaders, he won by ft length and a-half and was going away at the post. Eager Rose beat Glenetar by a length for second money, and behind the placed horaes came Template, Respirator, War Officer, Mountain Guide and Bizarro.

Another Surprise. Tho day's eport concluded with the Hoheon Handicap, for which Kins Smock (£780) was favourite, with Schorr and Ohinemuri next best backed, while Lomint wae at a good price. As they raced along the back Cynthia N ■was in charjre from Lomint, The Thorn, Eh Timi, Ohinemuri and King Smock, with Aricnhiß laat. Crossing the top tlio order of the leaders wae much the same. Cynthia was first to turn for home from Lomint, The Thorn, Eh Timi King Smock and Wenday. Lomint then took command, and Auriculue came fast on the outeide. A good finish saw Lomint get the d*ecfsion by half a length from .Auriculue, who beat Cynthia N by two r lengths. Wendny, King Smock, Stormy, Judge's Box an Eh T'iui were next. Later reeulto are:—
