PROVINCIAL NEWS.
THAMES. The new four-inch steel pipes for the re-laying and extension of the Taruru water supply have arrived at Thames, and a start with the work will be immediately made by the borough employees. The present four-inch main reaches as far as the public school, and the new main will extend about another mile to the Old People's Homes. The cost of the new work is estimated at £1000, mid when completed will provide this suburb of Thames with an adequate tire-lighting and domestic water supply.
The Thames Borough Council has erected a handsome brass suu dial in Victoria Park, the gift of Mrs. Albert Bruce, in memory of her late husband, who was town clerk of Thames for about 30 years. The dial, which is of very fine workmanship, is mounted on an ornamental concrete base and bears the legend "Amyddst ye flowers, I tell ye houres." On the northern side of the pedestal is a brass plate stating that the dial was presented by Mrs. Bruce.
An election will be held on November 5 for representatives for two subdivisions of the Hauraki Drainage Board. Messrs. S. S. Murray, J. C. Miller, and E. H. Heaphey have been elected unopposed for the northern and southern areas. The three candidates for two vacancies in the central subdivision are Messrs. H. H. Hichs and R. A. Kneebone (sitting members), and S. G. Williams. The candidates for two divisions in the south central division are Messrs. P. L. Hamilton and \V. McDuff (sitting members), and James Hamilton.
OPTJATIA.
The public hall at Opuatia, erected by the settlers of the district, was officially opened by Mr. W. Lee Martin, Labour candidate for Raglan. The hall, which is designed to accommodate between IXHJ and 000 people, was crowded. The site was donated by Mt. H. H. Sharp, while the money for building was provided by contributions from the settlers and others, plus a loan of £150.
