FLOOD HERO.
BRAVERY WHILE ON BAIL.
LONDON, October 26.
"You were bailed out to some purpose," said the magistrate at the Tower Bridge Police Court, reading from a newspaper cutting of the bravery of George Jackson, who was charged, with his brother, with drunkenness and fiehting. b
The cutting related that Jackson, during floods which caused a burst in a water main at Southwark, entered his employers' paper warehouse and, smashing the iron bars guarding the basement, with a fellow workman, made his way in the darkness through several cellars and dived repeatedly into ten feet of water in an attempt to opcu the manhole. He failed, but finally smashed the lid, and was dragged out of the water exhausted.
Later he saved his companion's life by pulling off a bale of paper when he was caught between two bales. The magistrate added that his behaviour had washed out his offence, and both men were discharged.
