(Received 12 noon.) LONDON, October 21. Mr. Andrew Fisher, a former Prime Minister of Australia, is seriously ill, and his recovery is despaired of.

The Bt. Hon. Andrew Fisher was born at Crosshouse, Kilmarnock, in August, 1862, and was educated in his home town. In 1885 he went to Queensland and entered Parliament there in 1893. He was Minister of Railways in the Dawson Ministry, and represented Wide Bay in the Commonwealth Parliament for the first fifteen years of the Parliament. During his membership of the Federal Parliament, he was Minister for Trade and Customs in 1904. He was leader of the Federal Parliamentary Labour party from 1907 to 1915, becoming Prime Minister of Australia in 1908 until 1909. He then again became the leader of the Opposition in the Federal Parliament from 1909-1910, and Prime Minister again from 1910-13 and 1914-15. He represented Australia at the opening of the Union Parliament in South Africa in 1910, at the Imperial Conference in 1911, and at the Coronation of King George V. He was High Commissioner for Australia in England from 1916-21. He was created a Privy Councillor in 1911.
