CANON HOANI PARATA.

DUNEDIN, this day. Canon Hoani Pa rata, vicar of Queenstown, is dead, aged 47 years.

Born in Dunedin, the son of Mr. John Parata, of Puketeraki, Mr. Pa rata was educated at Te Aute College i>nd Selwyn College. In 1907 he was assistant curate at St. Paul's, Dunedin, and later he went abroad. In 1911 he was chaplain to the British Consulate in Naples, and in 1912 he held a similar post in Cartagena, Spain. He then went to England, and in 1913-14 was assistant curate at St. Mark's, Kensington, London. He served in the war in Egypt and France, as a chaplain in the N.Z.E.F., and in 1919 returned to regular parish work in New Zealand.

Mr. Para t a was the author of "The Maori of New Zealand—Past, Present and Future." He married, in 1913, Miss Margaret Cowie, and had a family of four sons and one daughter.
