LABOUR DAY SPORTS.

DANCING AND ATHLETICS.

CELEBRATIONS AT DOMAIN.

INTERESTING PROGRAMME OF

EVENTS.

Leaden skies and occasional showers this morning made prospects for the athletic carnival arranged on the Domain in connection with the annual Labour Day celebrations anything but bright. It was a typical Labour Day morning, but it was not sufficient to dampen the ardour of juveniles, who had looked forward to the picnic gathering for weeks past, or discourage the officials who had planned to make the fixture a success. A shift of the wind effected a change in the elements, and the afternoon broke bright and clear.

With the weather more conducive thousands flocked to the ground to swell the ranks of young Aucklanders who had gathered at a very early hour to "run themselves in" on the wellprepared track, preparatory to participating in events arranged for them, and partake of the refreshments and good things that the stalls offered. To lend colour to the animated scene, which was set amid picturesque surroundings and refreshingly green bowers, dancers assembled for the Highland events mingled with the gay throngs or gyrated gracefully on the raised dias on the oval to the stirring skirl of the pipes.

The athletic events, which constituted the principal attraction of an interesting programme of events, were well patronised, and introduced a wealth of new talent to the athletic arena. All the fields were representative of the various clubs in Auckland, and competition was exceedingly keen. For so early in the season the competitors displayed good form and some very creditable times were registered, both in the running and cycling events, on a fastdrying track.
