FINAL FOR AMATEUR TITLE.
BALMACEWAN OOUBSE HEAVY.
(By Teltgrtpfc—Spedal;to' "Star.") "■ DUNEDW, this day. The final match forthe New Zealand amateur. golf .- . championship ' was started. on the Balmacewan links this morning, and at the ; end of tin first 18 hoSea T. H. Horton (Maatert<m)~'w*a two up on J. L. .Black (Otorohanga). . Black put up a wonderful fight.when he defeated C. B. Wight, after being nine, down at the end of 18'; holes, and Horton played beautiful golf against Br. Ken Ross, whom ho defeated one up in the eemi-final yesterday. It is ' notorious, however, that: the .-final seldom produces good golf,.and this morning's play was no exception. The conditions were most unpleasant, thbugh they improved during the morning. = After rain in the night the greens jrnd fairway* were still heavy. . •
Both players this morning were putting badly, and Black in particular failed time and again to sink possible putts. In addition, Black's long 1 game was most uncertain.;. In ite-first-half HbrV ton gave Black several chances, but he foiled to availhimaelf of .many, of .them. The-platen were square after nine holes, but Horton was two up at lunck time, though hia score for: 18 holes was so. •/ .. -<. ■ 7 \
