ELECTION NOMINATION

Sure Federal Government Seat

LABOUR'S WALK OVER.

SYDNEY, October 19.

Nominations closed to-day for the Commonwealth general election which is to be held on November 17. Practically all the sitting members were nominated.

A sensation was caused when it was disclosed that Mr. Robert Cook, the retiring member for Indi, Victoria, a Government supporter, had omitted to put in his nomination. It was a pure oversight.

As a result the Labour candidate, I Mr. Paul Jones, was automatically elected and a safe Government seat was lost. Mr. Jones has had no previous experience in Parliament. Three Government supporters in New South Wales were returned unopposed. Two Labour members in Victoria were similarly elected.

There will be contests in nearly all the other electorates and also for the seats in the Senate in every State.

The political parties represented are:—Nationalists and Country party nominees, who stand behind the Bruce Government, official Labour candidates, and about eight Independents.
