Misuse Of Chinese Customs
Revenue Denied. ALLEGATIONS IN PRESS. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 12.30 p.m.) SHANGHAI, October 19. Mr. Edwardes, the Acting Inspector - General of the Chinese Maritime Customs and virtual guarantor of China's foreign loans and indemnities, for which the Customs revenue is earmarked, has made an official statement, refuting the Chinese Press statements accusing him, firstly, of closing the Canton Customs house in June, 1925, contrary to the orders of the Chinese superintendent: secondly, of assisting the anti-National-ist forces by lending them revenue funds; and, thirdly, of hindering the Nationalist Government's efforts to obtain a tariff autonomy.
Mr. Edwardes has not yet announced his acceptance of the post as officiating Inspector for General Customs, offered jby the Nationalist Government.
It is. believed that he ; desires the removal of the Shanghai Customs Commissioner, M. Maze, on grounds that he & too gro«Va),io-aM« , _
