TROTTING.

NORTHLAND MEETING.

AT WHANGAREI ON MONDAY.

POPULAR COUNTRY FIXTURE.

Tlje annual trotting meeting of the Northland Trotting Club will be held at Whangarei on Monday and so popular has the light-harness sport become that it is only necessary for fine weather to obtain for the fixture to attract a big crowd. The Railway Department has arranged a special train to leave Auckland on Monday morning at six o'clock, returning the same evening and, as excursion fares will be charged, many will make the trip from the city.

The acceptances are hardly up to ex- 1 pectations in the majority of events, but even so there is every promise of fine racing, as the horses in many instances are weQl-known and proved performers, with fairly smart records against them. Dargaville Handicap. One of the biggest fields will line up in the opening event, the Dargaville Handicap, in which almost the whole of the horses are novices. In such a poor lot it is difficult to know how backers will sum up the position. Those that have raced have not been of much account and the chances are the favoured ones will be on the front end. Perhaps backers will go for CHRYSTAL, WARSPITE. Whangarei Trot. There are only half a dozen in the Whangarei Trot, and as Koro Peter is not going to the meeting, this means there will be only one dividend. Great Way, on the limit, has been going nicely in his work, while Royal Bob, 12yds, has occasionally shown pace, but is none too reliable. Amberite, 96yds, should easily beat Golden Gate, 120 yds. It is likely hackers will go for GREAT WAY. The Cup. The whole of the six acceptors should go to the post for the Northland Cup and on the form shown this week at Epsom backers should not have much difficulty in reducing the possibilities to a couple. . The Abbey is on the limit, 4.42, and he went 4.37 3-5 into third place on Wednesday, Sun fish winning in 4.35 1-5, and he is now on 4.38. Daytime ran unplaced and Lord Nepean did not show up at all in his races. Gold Dial can go a good two miles, but is erratic at the start, while Nelson Tasker has failed so consistently to win at two miles that it seems to be hoping for too much to expect* him to break the run. Boiled down there does not appear to be any reason for backers to,go outside •

SUNFISH, ■ • THE ABBEY. Kawakawa Handicap. Backers are set a problem in the Kawakawa Handicap, a 3.4 limit' mile and a-quarter. Many of- those engaged will have raced earlier in the Dargaville Handicap and the form then will probably affect the betting in the Kawakawa Handicap. However, backers will have to be on something and they may decide between CHRYSTAL, WARPLANE. 1 ' £ / Waipu Handicap. In a field of ten in the Waipu Handicap the race looks fairly open. Nothing appears to stand out and whatever wins may pay a fair price. Medusa may be the beat of the four on the * front, although Horizon would only have to be right to tke a deal of Mating. Satin-bird, 12yds, has speed, but may be TH4 safe by Nelson Dillon, who showed up. well for a mile at the Auckland meeting on Wednesday. Abrudbaaya only has to leave the mark .right to be in the money, and Gold Dial has a chance off 48yds. In an open race the favoured pair may be MEDUSA. * NELSON DILLON, President's t Trot. Should Great Way win the Whangarei Trot earlier in the day it will mean * a penalty for him in the President's Trot and this may settle his prospects. Royal Bob is on the limit with him, and on 36yds is the veteran Amberite, who should be at hbme in such company. Golden Gate, Sebisca and Ngatiri are all a long way back, but the front endera are a poor lot. Still, those on the front will be winning for a time and perhaps the money will go on AMBERITE, ROYAL 808. - ... Kaikohe Handicap. There are not many in the saddle and all except two will have raced earlier in the afternoon. It is therefore, unnecessary to go through them again, but this time, as it is a saddle race, the first choke may rest between WARPLANE. LORD LU. Labour Day Handicap. The meeting will close with the Labour Day Handicap and the same horzes will be seen out once more. The iorm earlier in the afternoon will find t»fc favourite perhaps, but two who zoay be in demand are RIBBON WOOD'S LAST, ABRUDBANYA.
