PROGRESS OF WORKS.

The chairman, Mr. A. M. Laing, presided over the monthly meeting of the Waitemata County Council held yesterday.

The overdraft from the fund 'account was stated at £ 15,824, anda accounts were passed for payment totalling £5810. It was stated that approximately £6000 was due from the Main Highways Board. It was also reported that an active policy was being pursued In recovering outstanding rate, and a number of certificates of sale of properties owned by defaulting ratepayers were ordered to be sent to the registrar of the Supreme Court for action. The finance committee drew attention to the fact that Kumeu and Waipareira ridingr were now without funds.

No objections having been received in answer to the statutory advertisement, loan proposals were authorised, and application made to the Local Government Loans Board for its sanction, as follows:—Rosedale Road, special loan of £450; Waitakere riding, loan of £20,000. With regard to the Walparelra riding loan of £2450. an objection was received to same from the Swanson Ratepayers' Association, on the ground that no provision Is made for the improvement of the Henderson to Swanson and Henderson Valley Roads. The objection was ordered to be sent to the loans board.

Health Inspector.—lnspector Hughes of the Health Department was appointed sanitary inspector for (he county, vice Inspector York now transferred to the position of caretaker of Somes Jsland quarantine station.

Engineer's Report.—Mr. A. Murray, county engineer, reported as follows;— That on the Henderson to Auckland Road, through the Waikumete Riding, a footpath had been constructed for pedestrians. Work bad been commenced at the Kumeu end of the Swansoa-Kumeu Main Highway, and it was intended to carry right through via Waitakere and the Tunnel Hill to Swanson, with roller and scarifier, and put the road In fair order. Like work had already been done on the Main Highway between Kumeu and Taupakl. The Main Highways Board surveyors were engaged In surveying the Huapal-Rewetl Main Highway with a view to obtaining an estimate for the reconstruction and sealing of this road. On the Birkenhead to Albany Main Highway the base course had now reached peg No. 4 miles 76 chains which road had now been blinded. The foundation course construction had also been carried out, to the six mile peg. This road now provides a through metalled road to Sllverdale.

Tltirangl Road.—A number of complaints were received as to the state of various portions of this road, which the council admitted was in a very bad condition. The engineer stated that he had been in communication with the Auckland City Council, who were chiefly responsible for the damage done, through carting waterworks material. He was led to understand that it was not their Intention to give anything towards the cost of maintenance. It was resolved to have a commission set up under the Public Works Act to apportion the cost of maintaining this road, which is being used extensively by the Auckland City Council for the purpose of constructing various portions of their waterworks scheme.
