FIRST MATCH.

M.C.C. TEAM.

Lack Of Dash Against West

Australia.

JARDINE GETS A CENTURY.

PERTH, October 18,

The English cricketers commenced their first match in Australia to-day at Perth against an eleven representing Western Australia. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat.

Their team comprised the following:— Chapman, White, Jardine, Sutcliffe, Tyldesley, Hammond, Mead, Hendren, Leyland, Ames and Geary.

England had the advantage of a good wicket, which had been sheltered from the rain that fell last night and this morning. Five thousand people watched the visitors bat in ideal weather, but departed unimpressed.

Western Australia is the weakest cricket State in the Commonwealth, yet the fielding and bowling of to-day's team compelled respect. The batsmen are evidently still suffering with sealegs. Apparently they played solely to preserve their averages and a dull day's cricket resulted.

Mead, the champion 6tonewaller, retired with a single to his credit amid ironical comments. Hammond's footwork and defence were excellent. Nevertheless he was not impressive and was out for 14.

Jardine was the star performer of the day. With beautiful strokes he scored safely and rapidly, mostly in singles. He hit eleven fours. He was finally caught at 109.

Tyldesley took chances in making 66. Hendren showed his old-time style in compiling 55. Toward the close of the day's play Hendren and Jardine brightened the batting considerably. The chief feature was the complete absence of any desire to display brilliance. Details of the Bcore are:— ENGLAND.—First Innings.
