AT N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS.

J. BLACK'S GREAT EFFORT,

The semi-final of the professional golf championship of New Zealand and the third roivnd of the amateur championship were played at Balmacewan yesterday. Conditons were almost ideal for golf. There was no wind, and the light rain which fell occasionally was not sufficient to interfere with play and fcad little effect on the condition of the course. The greens and fairways were in excellent order, although not' nearly as keen as they were at the commencement of the championships. Results of the third, round of the amateur championship were:— • J. L. Black (OtoroQhanga) beat C. B Wight (St. Clair), at the 37th. J. G. Duncan (Wellington) beat S. C. Colbeck (Otago), 6 and 5. T. H. Horton (Masterton) beat H. A. Black (Wellington), 4 and 3. K. Ross, (Otago) beat A. G. Sime (Westport), 12 and 11. The semi-final of the professional championship resulted:— A. J. Shaw (Napier) beat E. S. Douglas (Auckland), 6 and 5. J. D. Mcintosh (Gisborne) beat J. A Clements (Hagley), 5 and 4. The amateur contest was marked by a series of matches that developed into an uninteresting one-sidedness.. When C. B. Wight did his record round of 67 he was 9 up on J. L. Black, of Otorohanga, but in the afternoon the northerner made an electric finish of the match winning at the 37th hole. In the first nine holes Black reduced his leeway to 0, and then he took four holes in a row and there wag a rush of excited enthusiasts to watch the finish. Despite a strong effort by Wight, who was playine average goif, Black squared the match at the 16th. Both players were playing well, and they halved the next, two holes m 4 each amid tremendous excitement. Black played a smooth 4 for the 19th, while Wight, after just missing a long put for 3, ran sft past the pm, and he missed his second putt to halye the hole, and Black had won at the 37th hole after having been 9 down at the 18th!
