The conditions were changing, . and consequently difficult, when the New Zealand golf championship tournament was continued at Balmacewan links yesterday. Though the weather was bright, the fairway and greens were heavy in the morning, but dried and became faster in the afternoon. Under the circumstances,, surprises were expected in the afternoon, and the chief of those that came was the defeat of the open champion, Sloan Morpeth,, by C. B. Wight, of Otagow Morpeth could not get the stfength of the drying greens and his pitting was much below his usual standard, while Wight played excellent all-round golf to win 4 and 2. Among the other stars who*went down were E. M. and 11. W. Macfarlane, of Christchurch, and H. P. Dale, of Eltham, but , they succumbed to the? well-known players, J. L. Black, T. 11. Eorton and J. 6. Duncan.

In the first round of the -professional contest, results were as anticipated, Shaw, Douglas, Clements and Macintosh being the winners, though P. MAUNGAKIEKE CLUB.

Members and golfers generally are reminded that the annual' tournament commences on Saturday the 20th, on the Tkirangl links, and continues on Monday and Tuesday. ' >

To those who cannot enter for all events there is a special medal handicap on Saturday afternoon, a bogey handicap on Monday morning and medal handicap On Monday afternoon. Entries close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday 17th.

The new course will be ready and will be played on for the first time at. this tournament. . The new greens 'are looking well and will be in pretty Well perfect order for playing on by Saturday next. Members are notified that to enable the course to be completely ready the Titlrangi course will be closed to both ladles and gentlemen on Thursday and Friday of this week. The ladies' day, which is usually Thursday, has been changed to Wednesday.
