VISITING BISHOPS.

RETURN FROM CONGRESS. "A GLORIOUS SUCCESS." SIMPLICITY, PIETY, REVERENCE. " The Eucharistic Conference at Sydney was a glorious success," said the Right Rev. J. B. MacGinJey, D.D., Bishop of Monterey, Fresno, California, who reached Auckland this morning by the Ulimaroa. His lordship said that the conference, with its processions, was the most spectacular that lie had ever seen. The Chicago Eucharistic Congress, held four years ago, was 011 a bigger scale, but it was unwieldly, and not so impressive The organisation and arrangements in Sydney were perfect. The delegates from the United States included eight bishops, one hundred priests, and nearly as many laity. For many years Bishop MacGinley was stationed in the Philippines, and he went there before visiting Australia to meet his old colleagues. On the Ulimaroa was also Bishop Darnand, of Apia, Samoa, who had also been to the Congress. The bishop smiled when asked about the trend of affairs in Samoa, and said that it was a matter entirely outside his province. He was pleased to say, however, that the 'work of hi& church was making excellent progress in that part of the Pacific, and lie was confident that its good influence would steadily extend much further. In one respect Bishop Darnand has an advantage over his Californian bishopcolleague in that he visited New Zealand on a previous occasion, when he took part in Bishop Redwood's jubilee celebration. Bishop Darnand gave his impression* of the Sydney Eucharistic Conference in a few words. "It was wonderful in its simplicity, piety; and reverence," lie said. "Another wonderful feature was the respect that was shown bv the representatives of other faiths." Others who returned by the. Aorangi were Monsignor Ormond, of Auckland, and Father O'Donnell, of Waipawa.
