SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Birkenhead Old Boys held a very enjoyable dance in the RA.0.8. Hall on Saturday .night. Special lighting effects with coloured electric lights, balloons and streamers, and the many pretty designs among the ladies' dresses made a very fine display.

The Query Girls gave a very enjoyable progressive bridge party yesterday afternoon when a large number of players were present, tlie proceeds being in aid of-the Brett Memorial Home. The prize-winners were Mrs. H. Allen and Miss S. Norton.

The Birkenhead Labour party had a record night at their weekly whist drive on Saturday last. The prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs. Clements. 1, Mrs. Hardlana 2; gentlemen, Mr. Flavell 1, Mr. Taylor 2.

On Friday night a successful and enjoyable dance was held in the Matiere Hall, when the Plunket Society held the annual ball to organise the funds for the Matiere sub-branch. Many were present and the music,- which was very much appreciated, was supplied by Mrs. Armstrong. At midnight a delicious supper was served by the ladies of the Plunket Society and many other willing helpers.

On Tuesday last an enjoyable and wellattended "500" tournament wag held at the residence of Mrs. G. Kelly, Matiere. An enjoyable supper was served about midnight by the ladies of the committee and many other helpers. The proceeds were in aid of the Eiifelish Church. Miss I. Kelly was successful in winning the ladies' first prize, while Mr. A. Turner was the winner of the gentleman's The consolation was won by Mrs. G. Kelly, while the gentleman's was won by Mr. Pleasants.

Mrs. Owen Malion, of Mount St. John, Epsom, gave a delightful farewell tea party at the Tudor Rooms yesterday afternoon. The table was' a Dower of different, shaded anemones. The hostess, who is leaving for Australia on Friday, wore a gown of biscuit wool crepe de chine, with hat to tone. Among the guests were Mrs. A. Grayson, Mrs. R. Wright, Mrs. Andrews, Mrs. J. On Thursday the Henderson Women's Institute held its annual social in the Town Hall, and the function was again thoroughly enjoyed by all. The music for dancing was provided by Taylor's Orchestra, of Swanson, while the supper was provided by the members of the institute. The hall was decorated in red and white, presenting a very gay appearance with. the matay coloured frocks of. the dancers. Various items given during the evening included poi dancing and singing by visiting Maori girls, who met with appreciation from the audience. Mrs. Pollard and Mr. Booth both contributed songs and a 500 tournament was well patronised. The winners at cards were Mrs. Booth and Mr. Gordon Chrippes. Miss Spencer, president of the Hawke's Bay Federation of the Women's Institute, was present for a short time as a guest.

A very successful fancy dress dance was given by Miss Mabel Johnson at the Scots Hall on Saturday evening. There were over 300 pupils present, and a very bright scene was presented. Miss Johnand received her guests in a frock of black taffeta and beaded net, and carried a bouquet of red anemones and sweet peas, presented by her pupils. During the evening a minuet was danced by 20 of the seniors in costume, and Miss Johnson, with her partner, Mr. Hutchison, gave a delightful exhibition of the ,ballroom Yale Blues. This was followed by 12 couples in another charming performance. The finals of the senior, class competition were held. Joyce Carlew and lan Moir were first in the Friday class and Irene Isaacs and Arthur Sid4el, in the Saturday class. During the evening a presentation of a pair of opera glasses was made to Miss Johnson from her pupils.

The Ritz Dance Club held a very enjoyable evening at the Hall, Devonport, on Monday evening. The hall was gaily decorated with coloured streamers and lights of many hues. A surprise party was given to Mrs. Cerutty, of Glen Ayr, One Tree Hill, on Saturday evening. The organisers, Mrs. Lennard and Miss St. Clair Whyte, had made complete arrangements for an enjoyable evening, and the guests whiled away a very pleasant time in dancing, and competitions. Mrs. Cerutty wore an ecru lace over lettuce green satin, velvet sash. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Salek, Miss R. Bowles, Miss Edna Ballantyne, Miss Marjorie Cerutty, Miss D., Rainger, Miss Ethel Hardley, Miss N. Gastard, Miss St. Clair Whyte, Miss E. Atkins, Miss Nancye St. Clair Whyte, Miss Collins, Miss Taylor. The competitions were won by Miss N. St. Clair Whyte and Mr. Jack Newson.

The Auckland Retail Shop Assistants' Charity Club held a gala dance last evening at the Scots Hall, Symonds Street. Basketß of hanging ferns, numerous green and yellow streamers festooned the ceiling and walls, and many shades of balloons made for an effective decoration. Burnnand's orchestra was in a bower of numerous coloured electric lights and greenery. Miss Trotter and Mr. Dryland were recalled for a dual dancing number. On Saturday the Friendly Hall, Dominion Road, was the scene of a gay festival, the occasion being the celebration of the Celtic Soccer Club's first season, when over 100 guests sat down to supper. The tables were tastefully decorated with spring flowers and the hall in the club's colours, green and white. After partaking of the good things provided, games, singing and dancing were indulged in. The annual ball in connection with the Takapuna Municipal Band was held last night, in the Gaiety Theatre, at Takapuna, and proved a great success. The theatre was artistically arranged with fronds of nikau palms screening the walls, and ferns and arum lilies screening the stage, from which excellent music was played by Clyde Howley's Internationals. Overhead there was a great display of flags and bunting giving the warmth of colour to the theatre. The supper tables were prettily arranged with asparagus fern and large yellow marigolds.
