House-to-house canvassers offer many things for sale and provided tha price is low frequently manage to do basiner. Men have latterly been going round Auckland selling envelopes at sixpence each. On the front is printed the name of the packet, which is described as a perfect perfume, but when opened It found to contain about a tablespoonful of bran which has been nicely scented. The printing on the envelope states that the contents will kill moths, silverfish, mosquitos, etc., with the addition of the words, "Protect your picnic suits, costumes, and keep them free from tl! insects." The purchaser is warned, "Do not break this envelope. If opened the content* are useless." Mr. H. Freeman, of 263, Mount Albert Road, bought two envelopes at separate times and opened them.
