House-to-house canvassers offer many things for sale and provided tha price is low frequently manage to do basiner. Men have latterly been going round Auckland selling envelopes at sixpence each. On the front is printed the name of the packet, which is described as a perfect perfume, but when opened It found to contain about a tablespoonful of bran which has been nicely scented. The printing on the envelope states that the contents will kill moths, silverfish, mosquitos, etc., with the addition of the words, "Protect your picnic suits, costumes, and keep them free from tl! insects." The purchaser is warned, "Do not break this envelope. If opened the content* are useless." Mr. H. Freeman, of 263, Mount Albert Road, bought two envelopes at separate times and opened them. Then he called at the office of the "Auckland Star." "T bought the first one a month ajro." he said. The man stated it wa; to assist tbe unemployed fund. That enevelope has on it the name of a firm at Palmers - ton North. The second envelope was bought from a couple of men a mnntii later. It bears the name of Ward and Company, Auckland, with nu number or street stated. Ward and Company, clothing msnufacturers. of Chapcnnn Street. Newton, were at once communicated with bv telephone. Mr. Ward said he had a'lreatly heard aoout these paekeir-: "*\\ e are clothier*, he auded, "those packets ha\{* notning to d;i w;th our Sirus, ami I ui-h you would make tnat point oic:ir if vo'i are putting anything in your parer."
