AUSTRALIAN TITLE. POPPLEWELL WINS. WONDERFULLY SMOOTH GAME. (Australian and NJS. Press Association.) SYDNEY, September 9. In the open golf championship of Australia to-day F. Popplewell (New South Wales) won with a score of 295 for <2 holes. He defeated Bufus Stewart (South Australia) by one stroke.

In each of the four rounds Popple-' well's scores did not vary by more than two' stokes. His rounds were: 74, 73, 73, 75. Stewart's scores were: 78, 70, 75, 73. Sinclair took 300, Bolger 301, Nettlefold 302, Spence 304. | Popplewell holed out at one Tiole in lone stroke, the first time this, feat has been done in the open championship. In the first two qualifying rounds three players were level for first place, .Spence (Queensland), Sinclair and Popplewell, all 147. Popplewell is a former Australian champion. those who qualified were Nettlefold (Tasmanian champion), Nigel Smith and Herd (New , South' Wales), Rufus Stewart, all 148. Only 60 players qualified for the lastf two rounds. _ These included one New| Zea lander, A. D. S. Duncan, 159. K.' Duncan failed to qualify with 169.
