BOWLING.

MATCHES LAST SATURDAY. ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING. THE FATE OF THE REMITS. (By TRUNDLER.) | The Stanley representatives, J. M. ! White, S. Wrigley, R. McMaster, W. J. : Johnson, had a good win at Takapuna for the Edwin Stars on Saturday, 17 1 to 8 being probably the smallest score that has ever taken place for these trophies. The* next challengers are W. E. Foote, W. T. Smith, W. Gosling, Jervis Wright (Epsom), and then will come W. Bremner (West End) and J. Dick (Ponsonby). The Denison Pins are still at Ponsonby, A. J. Letham being so well supported that he had no difficulty in winning. Best and Dick both played a wonderful game, the policy of up-shots paying them handsomely on a day when the green was soaked with all the wet weather. Ponsonby were leading by 18 Ito 3 at the tea adjournment, and won easily. The next on the list are R. N. Melville, H. Martinson, J. Pascoe, J. Lowe (DevonpOrt), followed by A. Ward (Hillsboro') and J. Thomas (Mount Albert). The Jordan Pins also made no change on Saturday, Hillsboro' having their usual success in defending the trophies. The holders led by 10 at the tea adjournment, but Te Papapa pulled up well afterwards, and at one time were lying the tie on the last head. The next challengers are A. A. Brown (Onehunga) and C. H. Gatward (Mount Wellington). The Popularity of Bowling. Rather an interesting recognition of the increasing importance attaching to the game of bowls may be detected in the attention given to the annual meeting of the Dominion Council, held in J Wellington last week, for the "Dominjion" gives it two columns, and the ("Evening Post" devotes over three columns to the meeting and the subsequent smoke social. If one may judge from the reports of the debates, the meeting was one of the most successful ever held, and as the skip always gets blamed when the match is lost it may not be out of place to give a great deal of the credit for a profitable meeting to the tactful guidance of the new president, Mr. S. M. Stone, of Wellington. English as She is Spoke. Rather a peculiar discussion took place on the remit to pay the hotel expenses of visiting councillors attending the annual meeting. The president ruled, as the Duuedin president had ruled three years earlier, that as this is a constitutional change it would require certain formalities which precluded its immediate carrying, and in this he was supported by the hew "attorney-general" Of the council, Mr. C. J. Payne, the wellknown Dunedin solicitor, who has been elected vice-president, and will therefore be president next year. If that ruling is correct, then it is quite time that this rule was put into plainer English, for those of us who claim to know the English language just as well as the next man are certainly of opinion that "including" train and steamer fare does not mean the same as train and steamer fare "only," and therefore that the remit did not involve a constitutional change, but only a wider interpretation of a rule already in existence.

The r«mit was lofet by 8 votes to 6 (to become operative after the requisite notice of motion had been given), but if this ruling is correct it requires a threefifths majority of those present. This would* require nine in favour, a swingover of three, so the position is apparently weaker than it was three years ago. It is not really important whether it is carried or not, for bowling will never be short of competent men who are prepared to pay their own expenses. Bowl-Testing Fiasco. There will be general satisfaction that the Dunedin remit about bowl-testing was lost. Some of the speakers let the mover down very gently by saying that in their opinion there was a good deal in it. Perhaps there is—a good deal that is bad—but at this distance it would take rather a powerful telescrope to detect anything good in it. Altering the Representation. It was rather strange that a discussion took place and a vote taken to throw out the South Auckland remit, moved by Mr. Pilkington, to make a group of centres elect their own' council representative, instead of each Island electing six, for it might have been expected that Mr. Hartley's motion of a year ago would have, .been given precedence over this. Whether- the president was right, that a • committee was actually appointed to report, or whether merely notice of motion t6 that effect was given, it looks irregular ■ to allow that to be superseded by another one. As it happened, it was lost, not a single councillor voting for it, so it does not look very hopeful for the original motion, if ever it is brought up again. The only alteration in the reprethat seems likely .is to bring the membership for the two Islands more into conformity with their respective club membership. At present there are .very nearly twice as many bowlers in the North 'Island as there are in the South, and the increase during the year was about twenty times as many in the former as in the latter, and yet each electft six councillors. However, there would probably be nothing of any practical value gained by disturbing this representation, glaringly inequitable though it is. The Press Match Next Week. The annual match of the Press and the Printers, this year against Carlton, will take place on Saturday week, September 22. All intending competitors are invited to give their names to the convener in their own office, or else direct to the, Sports Editor of the "Star," telephone No. 46-990. It is essential that this should be done this week, so that the Qarlton committee may reserve the requisite number of rinks. f - . CLUB GAMES. EPSOM GBEEN. Yearbury, Mori son 22, v.
