THAMES NEWS.
MAIN HIGHWAY TO AUCKLAND. (From Our Own Correspondent.) THAMES, Saturday. The improvements effected to the main highway to Auckland by the opening of the Hauraki Bridge near to Thames and the new deviation just the other side of , Waitakururu has brought Thames very close to the city. A party of Thames men, who wished to attend a meeting in Auckland, left Thames by car at 3 p.m., sat down to dinner in Auckland at 6 p.m., attended their meeting, leaving Auckland at 11 p-m. and arrived back at Thames two hours and a-half later. The efforts of the Thames Chamber of Commerce to have a mail delivered at Thames by the 3 a.m. train has at last borne fruit, for a letter has just been received from the chief postmaster, Thames, stating that a speeding-up has been effected and that by using the 3 a.m. goods train from Frankton Junction parcels po6ted in Auckland up to 3 p.m. and other second-class matter posted up to 5.30 p.m. will be delivered at Thames by 9 a.m. the following day, instead of at 12.30 p.m. as previously—a saving of three and a-half hours. Another improvement is that on Mondays Southern mails, which leave Wellington on Saturday afternoon, will also be delivered at Thames at 9.30 a.m.
