SLUMP IN EGGS.
MARKET OVERSTOCKED. smaller export just now. Owing to heavy supplies ot egg- being on the local market. price.- are very low at the present time. It is not often that egg- can lie got retail from 1/4 to I '~> per dozen, but, that is tlio position this week. Two cause? have tended to bring about the present state of the market. One reason is flint there appear- to be a pretty heavy carryover of egg pulp from la-t season, probably due to the bakers having- ?old less cake owing t° times not being so good. The result far as the local market is concerned is that bakers arc not buying so fieely for preserving for next winter's supply. An even greater cause of the present glirt of eggs 011 the local market is the fact that so far there has been no export. The shipping: companies want exporters of eggs to take a whole chamber. which means about SOO ,crates, and it is not always possible to get that quantity together in time, as with thirty dozen to the crate it means gathering a big parcel in a short time. Meanwhile the poultry-keeper? have to sell eggs at prices that cannot pay, especially seeing that there is a duty of 1/1 per bushel to be paid on wheat for fowl feed
