UAKT PATENTS SOUGHT. ELECTRICITY INVENTIONS LEAD. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Applications to the number of 2052 v. ere received in respect of patents last year, according to the annual report of the Registrar of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks tabled in the House to-day. During 1926 applications totalling 2137. and receipts from various sources on •iccount of patents amounted to £9061. There has been a fairly large increase in ■he number of inventions recorded in l iasses relating to electricity and mag- ' > tism, the total being 153. as against in the previous year. Thirty-six related to fibre dressing, and 16 to kauri -inn. with 73 inventions concerning tools. There was an increase of ten over last year. Increases also took place in dairying, in which classes there were 51, and furniture with 67, but there was a decline in the number of inventions in connection with milking machinery (42} 1. vehicles (2321. and internal combustion engines (50). A large number of applications continue to come in respecting telephony and telegraphy, chiefly in conncetion with wireless systems, though a falling off is shown compared with the previous year. Little variation is shown in other classes. Applications in respect of designs numbered 145. being 59 less than in 1026. The total applications in respect of patents, designs and trademarks numbered 3522, which was higher than for 1926, and also higher than the total average since 1922. Considering the commercial depression general throughout the world, it is recarded as a matter for congratulation that so little fluctuation has been shown, since it demonstrates that those concerned in industry and trade view the future with confidence.
