DEATH OF MR G. S. JAKINS.
The death is announced of Mr. George Sargent Jakins, aged 89 years, at his late residence. St. Stephen's Avenue, Parnell. He was a son of the late Dr. I. N. Jakins, Osnaburgli Street, London, and brother of Dr. Percy Jakins, Harlev Street. London, and was born on April 20. IS.S9. He came to New Zealand and settled in Auckland on December 20, 1859, having come out in the barque Nourmahal, on which the Rev. Hudson was also a passenger. Mr. Jakins had his first Christinas dinner with the Hudsou family, at Mahurangi, and New Year's dinner with the Whitsons, afterwards brewers, known as Whitson and Co. He obtained a situation a? salesman in the linn of Owen and Graham. In May, l.Stio, he married the youngest daughter of the Rev. John Hobbs, an early missionary. He then started for himself in business, afterwards joining Samuel I. Edmonds, as general merchants, in Queen Street. He then returned to London to buy. Shortly after his return the firm lost £20,000 on the East Coast, through Te Koot's war. Te Kooti killed many of the traders and took all the stores and vessels. Maliurangi saw Mr. Jakins again for a year; then the Thames goldfields (Shotover) broke out, and Mr. .Takins came back to Auckland. Here he began business as a produce merchant in Durham Street, taking in as p.irtner Mr. Dennitts Willcox, and remained as such for eight years. Then Mr. Willcox went to Christ church and Mr. Jakins carried on by himself. After some years Mr. Jakins joined Mr. Willcox again as Jakins and Willcox. In 1888 he went to Sydney, and joined Mr. Bower in business as Jakins and Bower. Later he went to Melbourne, and 19 years ago came back to Auckland to end his days. Mrs. Jakins predeceased her husband seven years ago. He leaves two sons. Mr. G. *V. Jakins and Mr. n :trold Jakins, both of Christchurch, and daughters, nine gra; Ichildren, and great-grandchildren. For the last ':en years Mr. Jakins resided with daughter. Miss Jakins; at 8, St. . Inn's Avenue, Parnell.
