OVERSEAS SPORT.

STILL AMBITIOUS. Tom Heeney Says He Will Return To U.S.A. ON THE WAY HOME. (United Service.) (Received 10.30 a.m.) VANCOUVER, August 22. Tom Heeney, the New Zealand boxer, and his wife and three brothers, will sail for New Zealand to-day by the Aorangi. Tom is loosing forward to his visit to his old home. The party boarded the motor ship yesterday. In an interview, Tom said he intended definitely to return to America about December to compete in the heavy-weight title elimination bouts. He said he was hopeful of being good enough then to beat the other aspirants. Before sailing on the Aorangi Heeney said: "Sure, I will fight again. I don't know whom, as I leave that to the managers, • but I shall get in the Rickard's elimination contest and may be back in December or sooner. It depends on how I like it in New Zealand. If it gets boring I may come back iu a month or two, but I won't fight there; the purses are not large enough. I will be glad to get back home for a while, but do not intend to stay. When Ido settle down I think it will be in the United States. The wife lives there, and I have lots of friends in New York.' TILDEN'S STATUS. Big Bill Tells L.T.A. He Has Other Things To Do. GIBE BT THE CRITICS. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 22. W. T. Tilden has sent a letter to the United States Lawn Tennis Association stating that he will be unable to appear in person at the professionalism hearing on Friday. He adds that he never intentionally violated the amateur writer rule, that his articles were editorial and commentative, and that any violation was only a technicality. He says he had inado great personal and monetary sacrifices to aid the American Davis Cup team this year, and was ready to agree to receive no compensation for the Wimbledon articles in question. He concludes that "something should be done to clarify and accurately define the rights of the player under the player-writer rule." A distinctly unfavourable impression has been caused by Tilden's decision not to appear in person at the hearing. It had been hoped that the entire position of American tennis would be clarified at an open bearing where a. face-to-face discussion between the so-called conservative and liberal elements of tennis officialdom would help this sport over a dangerous transition period here. Tennis writers are particularly bitter over Tilden's action, some of them asking, "Has he turned tail, and is fleeing?" TENNIS IN U.S.A. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) NEW YORK, August 22.
