THE MILK TRADE.

WELLINGTON'S EXPERIENCE. (To the Editor.) Judging from Mr. Moutgomerie's reply to my previous letter, I can visualise in him a reticent and sensitive gentleman wno is neitner accustomed to being asked, nor used to answering, direct questions. If Mr. Montgomerie is not in a position to answer tneia his plan is only half-baked and is thereiore only a supposition. As such lie should not have gone into print with it. In his letter of tho 14th inst. he makes mention that the Wellington Municipal jxxiik t>our« mane* a substantial profit out of milk. That may be true. Mr. Montgomerie must not overlook the fact that Wellington suffered severe losses over a period of years at the beginning of tho venture. It is doubtful even yet whether the aggregated profits earned are sufficient to wipe off the losses sustained at the early stages of the undertaking. It is quite evident that Mr. Montgomerie is making gestures by which the City Council can be approached regarding municipalising the milk business. I think the state of our transport system is quite sufficient to prejudice the public mind against that body entering upon any further ventures. I appreciate there is no need for "hot air" in this discussion. I just want an opportunity of analysing Mr. Montgomerie's project so that the public may judge which of us is using it. Mv questions are still unanswered, so apparently they are not my hurdles. HOT AIR.
