AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

WINTER COMPETITIONS,

DOMAIN NEXT SATURDAY.

The Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club continued its series of coinpetitions at the Domain last Saturdar before a large muster of both athletes anil spectators. One of the best fields of sprinters seen out this season faced the starter in the 75 yards handicap. Thev all went away well with the exception of V. R. Walker, who slipped and lost two or three yards, and thus spoilt his chance. Murray, from the front, quickly set the pace, and. staying on well, just itot to the tape inches ahead of Butler and Clarke, who deadheated for second place. Murray has been running for many years, and has sained many notable successes on the track. He is the father of B. M. Murray, the present holder of the 120 yards hurdles championship. Butler put in a fine finishing effort to gain second place. Butler was conceding starts to such capable sprinters as L. H. Meredith and V. Walker, and it was an excellent performance to finish so close to the winner. With experience, Butler should turn out one of the best sprinters in Auckland. A large field lined up for the two-mile steeplechase, nnd a fine race was witnessed. The winner, C. IJ. Wilson, was always well up, and judging his final burst well, gathered in McNeil with about 250 yards to go, going on to win easily by 20 yards. He has a rather peculiar stride, but displays plenty of stamina. McNeil was the pacemaker right up till : 250 yards from home, but the pace he had set in the early stages left him without a finishing effort when Wilson tackled him. Next Saturday the clnb will continue Its winter competitions at the Domain, and the following week will go to Henderson.
