DOMINION TOURNAMENT.

ALL PROVINCES REPRESENTED

CARNIVAL OPENED TO DAY

The third Dominion basketball tournament, which is creating considerable interpst, wa9 commenced this afternoon at the Normal School grounds, Wellesley Street, The New Zealand Basketball Cup was first contested for in 1926, when Auckland won, and this province succeeded again in 1927. For this year's contest teams are competing from Otago, Southland, Canterbury, Wellington, Taranaki, Hawke's Bay and Auckland.

The members of the visiting teams, numbering 72 in all, are being billeted by the Auckland Basketball Association, and during their stay here are being treated to a wide programme of entertainment.

As showing the growing popularity of the game of basketball it may be mentioned that the New Zealand Association was first formed in 1924, and the following year there were only four associations in New Zealand. In 1925 there were six, the game having spread to North Otago and Southland, and since then Hawke's Bay, Ashburton, Taranaki and Poverty Bay have joined up, and there is every indication that Manawatu will be in next year.

In the first round of the Cup competition to-day Auckland (holders) drew a bye. To-morrow'* Draw. 9.30 a.m.—Auckland v. Hawke's Bay (Referee, Mise O. Hooker). 10.30 a.m.—Southland v. Canterbury (Miss M. E. Armstrong). 11.30 a.m.—Wellington v. Taranaki (Mr. R. J. Thompson). Otago a bye. 1.45 p.m.—Otago v. Taranaki (Miss 0. Hooker). 2.45 p.m.—Auckland v. Canterbury (Miss M. E. Armstrong). 3.45 p.m.—Wellington v. Hawke's Bay (Mr. R. J. Thompson). Southland, a bye. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Council delegates will be held this evening at the Y.W.C.A. To-morrow evening the visiting players and delegates will be entertained oy the Auck* land Association at Unity Hall.
