I ROACH REPLACES PAEWAI. i MASTERTON. this day. Roach (Wairarapa) has been selected as full-back for the North Island toani in place of Paewai. It is expected that the only additional Shield matches Wairarapa will play this season will be Marlborough, Wellington and Mnnawlienua. PRIMARY SCHOOLS' COMPETITION. NORTHERN ROLLER MILLS SHIELD. The annual competition for the much coveted Northern Roller Mills' Shield will commence next week at Paeroa and To Aroha. There is a keen interest displayed in the possession of this trophy, even more so now than when it was presented four years ago by Mr. W. Pratt. The first winners were the Auckland team, hut during the past two years Thames Valley have proved too good for all-comers, and are still the holders of the shield. This year there are eight entries, Auckland supplying three, and Thames Valley. Hamilton, Manukau. Waipa. and South Auckland one team each. Auckland's contingent will comprise sixty players, and are drawn from the Showgrounds, Eden Park, and City schools' groups. The boys will be under control of the teachers, and will be billeted at Te Arolia, Paeroa, Waihi, and Hikutaia. The games will be played at Te Arolia and Paeroa, starting on Tuesday, and finishing on the Saturday, with a final between the two then leading teams. Those responsible for the selection of the local teams offer the opinion that they are better than last year, and have every hope of wresting the shield from the present holders. It is due to the generosity of the Auckland Rugby Union that the trips have been made possible for the Auckland boys, and those in charge have expressed their appreciation of the very material assistance given to schools each year by way of grants, footballs. cost of travelling, and the entertainment of visiting teams. On their part the Union consider that it is their duty to encourage the boys in every legitimate "way. and their greatest pleasure Is in seeing such a largo body of primary school bovs attached to the Rugby code.
