"CHAMPION MEAN MAN."
THIEF GIVEIT HARD LABOUR. ROBBED HIS BENEFACTOR. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Described as a " champion mean man," Andrew Deer, aged 29, was sentenced today to a year's imprisonment with hard labour for the theft of a bicycle. He had pleaded guilty. Chief Detective Carrol! said that Deer had been befriended by a man named John Lewis Freeman, who had given him a bed, meals, and work. Freeman then gave him recommendations for work to two men, and lent him a bicycle on which to go to one of the jobs. He was found by a constable trying to sell the bicycle to a dealer. He told the constable that he was buying ,the bicycle, but inquiries showed that the facts were to the contrary. "He has a long list, including manslaughter, forgery, and breaking and entering," said the Chief Detective. Besides being a thief he is a champion mean man." Accused said that he was trying to go straight, but " being out of work for a piece made it hard."
