TRIAL HURDLES TO NUCLEUS.

CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting opened to-day at Riccarton before a very large attendance. The weather and the course are good.

Chrissarto and Prompter were I scratched for the Hunters' Hurdles. J Home Made was favourite, with Diana s c Lad next best backed. Goldtown and n Loughrea led over the first hurdle, and a furlong further on they were joined c by Diana's Lad, while Rangi Sarto was last, with Pink Rose and Kempsev Jtist t in front of him. Passing Cutts' Lough- l rea and Diana's Lad drew out trom Goldtown, while a little further on c Kempsey, Umtali and Home Made moved up. Home Made fell six furlongs from s home, and at the five furlong post Loughrea retired. Diana's Lad led ( Rangi Sarto over the last hurdle, and ] went on to win easily by two lengths. ] Rangi Sarto beat Umtali by a neck for ( second place, with Goldtown fourth. i Favourite Again Beaten. ] Loughrea, Panorama, Standard and Piccaninny were scratched for the Trial 1 Hurdles, in which Nine of Spades car- j ried most money. Erin-go-Bragh led j over the first hurdle, and was then ( joined by Amorist and Nine of Spades, with Craigmore heading the others. Erin-go-Bragh and Steel Bar hit the second hurdle hard. Craigmore led out , of the straight, three lengths in front of Amorist, with Erin-go-Bragh, Nine , of Spades and Quincoma next. Passing the mile post Craigmore was three lengths in front of Amorist. A little further on Lady Passenger made a forward move. Half a-mile from home, Craigmore, Amorist, Nucleus, Lady Passenger and Nine*of Spades were in close order. Nucleus led over the last hurdle, and went on to win easily by three lengths. A great finish for second place resulted in Craigmore beating Lady Passenger by a nose. Nii:e of Spades was four lengths away fourth. The Hacks. In the Cashmere Plate the colours of The Viscount, First Raid and Roi de Val were first to become prominent, and they were still showing out whenh the course proper was reached, with Malmsey, Sarnia and Waihemo not far away. A little further on Starshooter and Noteworthy made their appearance, the lastnamed pair drawing away inside the distance. In a good finish Noteworthy beat Starshooter by half a length.
