CLOSE WIN OVER HAWKE'S BAY.
FIVE POINTS TO THREE. (By Telegraph.—-Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday. Perfect conditions favoured the Taranaki-Hawkc's. Bay match. Bay kicked off against the sun 4 Taranaki started with great dasl'i, invaded Bay territory, and play gradually worked back till the Taranaki line was endangered. 'jTTie game was rapidilv carried back, and Bay forced. Taranaki were penalised for rf)fT-side. Yates' kick missed. Taranaki forwards rushed play to the other end, where the Bay were penalised. Collins' kick, from near halfway, just missed. Bay made a determined attack, and penned the home team in their twenty-live for several minutes, till Collins found the line at half-way. Bay came again, and were nearly over till a free kick was awarded Taranaki. The Bay line-kicking was much superior to that of the home team, and kept the game mostly on Taranaki's side of half-way. From a free kick Brotherdav attempted to drop a goal, but the kickfell short. Bay again attacked hard, and Taranaki forced. From the kick-ofT Dennis got the ball, and looked like scoring, but was called back for off-side play. Half-time was called, with the game in midfield, and no score.
Resuming, the home forwards again went off with great dash, and momentarily looked dangerous, but Bay worked the "ball back, and from a free kick Yates again missed the posts, and Taranaki forced. From a forward rush Dennis scored, but Yates failed to convert. Taranaki forwards carried the bal! to Bay territory, but the defence was too solid.
Bay rushed play to Taranaki's end. and the home team again forced. The Taranaki tackling and. line-kicking at this stage were very poor. Hawke's Bay pressed hard till Brown found the line at half-way, and from the line-out W. Hohaia intercepted a Bay pass, and scored in the corner. Collins converted. Taranaki 5, Hawke's Bay 3.
The Bay again attacked, till offside play relieved Taranaki. Offside play gave Yates another chance, but the ball passed under the bar. Bay came again, strongly, and nearly scored. Brown carried the play to Bay territory, and the home team - were now playing a better game, and had Bay defending. Playing desperately, Bay again attacked, and Taranaki forocil Play was kept in mid-field till the bcl' rung, leaving Taranaki lucky winners, | Taranaki 5 - Hawko's Bay 3
