ALL BLACKS WIN.

EASTERN PROVINCE MATCH. SIXTEEN TO THREE. EVEN FIRST SPELL. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) PORT ELIZABETH, August 12. After a disappointing exhibition th» All Blacks beat Eastern Province by two converted and two unconverted tries to one unconverted try, at Port Elizabeth yesterday. A crowd of 10,000 witnessed the match. There tva* A fair wind, which blew downfleld. The ground was of green turf, and was slightly on the soft side after rain. It was several minutes before th»' All Blacks became warmed up, the Eastern Province forwards holding thein well. The New Zealand backs opened out in two or three movements, but with the opposing rearguard smothering well, the attacks were broken. Strang started another movement, from which Lilburne cut in. Burrows took his pass, and going all out dived over the line just as he was tackled. The kick at goal missed. All Blacks 3 Eastern Province 0 Eastern Province was doing its best to keep the game tight, and in this it succeeded. For a time there was a series of uninteresting melees, in which the All Blacks had the better of the play. Three fine line-kicks put Eastern Province on the attack. Visitors Sluggish. Its backs started their first passing movement, the ball going out to the centre, Dower, who drew Johnson, ran past Lucas on the inside, and scored! a brilliant try at the corner. It was the best try so far scored against the All Blacks. The kick missed. All Blacks 3 Eastern Province 3 Clever work by Strang, Lilburne and Jflfrnson took operations to the Eastern Province line, but a score was prevented by offside play. Then followed another spell of ragged work, which lasted until half-time. It had been a period of particularly dull Rugby. Eastern Province started off the second half by rushing the play to the All Blacks' line, where it won the ball from several serums. The backs g.A away in a couple of dangerous move ments, which needed the best New Zealand defence to keep its line safe. Thsee Tries Added. Then the Ail Black forwards started in workmanlike fashion. They rushed play downfleld, where Strang set the backs off. Lucas beat his man and a try looked certain, but he was well tackled from behind. Again the New Zealand forwards dominated the play. After getting Strang's pass from a scrum, Lilburne dummied his man, sent the ball on to Johnson, who* passed infield, for Strang to score between the posts. Strang's kick hit an upright. All Blacks 6 Eastern Province 3 New Zealand was continually on the attack now, but deadly tackling by Eastern Province kept it out. Still the New Zealandert hammered away at the line. At last, from a scrum, Strang broke away and passed to Burrows, whe scored his second try. Lindsay converted. All Blacks 11 Eastern Province 3 The Eastern Province forwards made a rush upfleld, but they were soon forced back to their own twehty-live agiiin. A few minutes later the New Zealand backs started a rush from a scram. After both Johnson and Lucas had dropped the ball, Rushbrook snapped it up and dived over at the Corner. Lilburne converted with a great kick. All Blacks 10 Eastern Prorince 3 The final whistle went frith the All Blacks still attacking.

African Defence Good. Apart from the fact that the New Zealanders played a disappointing game. much must bo said - for the excellent tackling of the whole Eastern Province team. Seldom was a man missed. The All Blacks seemed to work in onlya. half-hearted I "ay. It was a big reversal of their display in the last three, matches. Lindsay played Us usual first-class football, but Strang was patchy. The only back to play anything like good football was Lilburne, who did much smart work. Hadley, McWilliams and Snow seemed to be the only forwards who had their heart in the game. Third Test Match. It is now definitely stated that Blnnie Osier, South Africa's crack fly half, will not be able to play in the third Test. An injured thigh muscle is still giving him considerable trouble. The New Zealand players to train for the next Test will be chosen on Monday, while the Springbok team will be definitely picked on Wednesday.
