OMR) NATIONAL MEETING.

THE OPENING DAY. PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW. Till'. FIELDS REVIEWED. The Now Zealand Grand National meeting will be inaugurated at Riccarton to-morrow, and with the good fields engaged t hern should be some very fine raring. All tlie best jumpers in commitnion are there, and thotijzli the big event, the Grand National Steeplechase, has only attracted a field of nine, there is iiiffieicnt material to nrake the race a really gooil one. The Hunters' Hurdles.

The programme will open with the Hunters' Hurdles, for which eleven are carded. Louplirea is top weight with 12.9, but lie has not started over hurdles in public yet, though he is credited with bcin" able to jump well. He has a fine record <;ii the Hat, and would only need to be able to jump to have a chance. However, one would prefer to see him in a race. Pink Note performed creditably early last season over hurdles. Home Made made his first appearance in a hurdle race at Napier Park and won, while at Wellington he was third to San Pedro and Troilua in the Vittoria Hurdle Race. Rangi Sarto was second in the Hunters' Hurdles at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, but Goldtown ran very poorly in that event. Of the others Diana's Lad, who won the event, will command rcspcct. The best backed may be:

DIANA'S LAD RANGI SARTO HOME MADE The Trial Hurdler. The Trial Hurdle Race ha. a traded a field of fourteen. Quincouia won well at Wellington over a mile and a-half, with 9.13, but failed on the last day with 10.13, a similar impost to that which he has to-morrow. He d.d not plea«e on Saturday in his effort over hurdles at Riccarton. Loughrea has also an engagement in the Hunters' Hurdle Race. Nucleus won two hurdle event# at the Egmont summer meeting, and recently ran fairly well in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham. The latter race should do her good. Panorama won a double over hurdles at the Woodville autumn meeting, and wm placed in two hurdle events at the Feilding Easter meeting, while at the Marlborough meeting, held at Trentham, he was also in the money. Nine of Spades had a good record since being put and was unlucky at the Chriitchtirch Hunt Club's meeting recently. Craigmore won well at Dunedin in June, but he did not impress at Riccarton on Saturday week. Lady Passenger was third in the Corunna Hurdle* at Wellington last month, but Standard and Steel Bar have yet to prove themselves in this department. Erin-go-bragli haa a good deal of pace and jumps well, and after leading for the greater portion of the way in the Talavera Hurdle Race at Trentham, fi ished third. The most favoured division when the machine closes may be:

NINE OF SPADES NUCLEUS PANORAMA The Cashmere Plate. The Cashmere Plate is run at special weights over six furlong*. Despot h " been a bit unlucky. Locarno showed his ability bv winning a. five and a six and a-half furlong event at the recent Hawke's Bay meetings. He was ®econd in the Hunters' Plate at Riccarton last Saturday week, and m evidently pretty fit. Malmsey had a record last season and is Bare to be especially as she finished fourth in the Brabazon Handicap at Riccarton a week ■go. and has foregone her engagement in the Winter Cup for this event. Narrative has not been out of a place in ner last five starts. Noteworthy appears to have been galloping well at R,cc * rt °"; He has just turned three and was nOt raced as a two-year-old, Winning the Juvenile Handicap, six furlongs, at the South Canterbury spring meeting, after running second in the Spring Sta Arikiwai, while previously he was second iil the McLean Stakes at Dunedm to Childsplay, though the latter won very easilv. Roi de Val has been g P ing well at Trentham and Riccarton, and he is likely to run well. Sarnia won the Maiden Stakes at the Christchurch Hunt Club's meeting, but has an extra furlong to no to-morrow. Starshooter is a promising sort and may be the best of the others. Money support will probably •be given to:

MALMSEY LOCARNO ROI DE VAL The Jumperi' Tlat Race. Nukumai ha« won the Jumpers' Flat Race on two previous occasions, and ha« now been weighted at 12.9, which w a big burden. He failed last year with 12.12, and he will need to be at hia best to score, for he is giving away » lot of weight to the other* engaged. Uiickwheat won over a mile and a-quarter a the Ashburton winter meeting, while Scion, who has an Auckland Cup and a New Zealand Cup to hi« credit, 'has won over hurdlles recently. Ateteria has won up to a mile and a-quarter, and appeal* to be galloping well at Riccarton. G*"' has a good deal of pace, white Tarlecon, since he was operated on for trouble, lias been getting through ais work well and galloped well at Riccarton on Saturday. Brigadier Bill is useful in all departments of the game. Lady | Gay was third in the Highweight Handicap on the middle day at Wellington lawt month and has to be considered. When the machine closes it may be found that mo«t money ia invested on

ATETERIA tarleton GAZE The Big Steeplechase. Beau Cavalier has been awarded 12.5 in the Grand National Steeplechase, which is the most he has allotted. He failed under 12.2, at JjJe"lie and fell with 11.13 at Wei'"4 * However, he was going well in the latter event when the mishap occurred. & with the big impost he will run well.

.Pamplona was only started once last season, and won the Wingatui Steeple- * Btated *° be a » 00d Jumper, and has many southern friends. Tuki won the event in 1925, and this season BCC H i" the Great Northern. He knows the Riccarton country well and .« sure to be in demand. Po?ri was put | over the Riccarton country on Saturday, but ran off at the second fence of the double. This will not increase his supporters, but he has only to jump prSFT& «■ C a chance after his display at Wellington. Wiltshire lost his rider when tried over the Riccarton jumps tfle Bame remarks apply to this horse. Dubious and Passin' Through may perhaps be the best of the others. Possibly the most fancied may TUKI BEAU CAVALIER POURI The Hack Steeplechase. The Enfield Steeplechase is a hack event. Radiate performed well last season, and in his last start was second at Trentham. Jovial scored at the South Canterbury meeting and should be troublesome over two miles. Royal Fashion was placed in two steeplechases at Dunedin and one in Waimate recently. Royal Wink annexed the Aylesbury Steeplechase at the last Grand National meeting, while during the last few weeks he won the Waimate Steeplechase and finished second to Jovial in the South Canterbury Steeplechase. Rangi Sarto has a prior engagement in the Hunters' Hurdles, but at the Hawkes Bay winter meeting he annexed the Woodlands Steeplechase, beating Radiate and Matu. He was second in the Kennels Hurdle Race at the Christchurch Hunt meeting a week ago and galloped well on Saturday. If reserved for this event he will be in demand. Captain Sarto annexed fane Hunt Club Steeplechase at the Waimate mefeting last month. The bulk of the investments may go on

RADIATE JOVIAL RED WINK The Chief Flat Event. The Winter Cup is the chief flat event of the day. Black Mint won the Whyte Memorial Handicap, one mile, at Wellington, after annexing a mile and a mile and a-half race at Dunedin. He 6'howed up in his other engagements at the meeting, and with 10.11 cannot be ruled out. Taboo showed good form

at Wellington, and also finshed third in the Brabazon Handicap at Riccarton recently. He has won up to a mile and a-quarter, and is sure to have a lot of friend*. Royal Damon has also shown form up to a mile and a quarter, and did the beet gallop at Riccarton on Saturday. Solferite has not pleased recently, though he won the event last year. Kaiti has three victories over six and ahalf furlongs jn the last three starts, and by the way he went at Riccarton last Saturday "he is very well. He and Royal Damon put up the best gallop of the morning over seven furlongs. Nincompoop was second la#t year in this event Royal Game has not much to commend him recently, but Town Bank was second to Fairy Herald over a mile at the South Canterbury meeting recently. Bisoz was fourth in the Whyte Memorial Handicap at Trentham, and won the Parliamentary Handicap in good style. She is in pretty good fettle and should run well. Panther was ■econd to Taboo in the Stewards' Handicap at Trentham, only being baaten by a head, and on that showing he is expected to be very hard to beat. However, he has two furlongs further to go. First Sight is likely to go out favourite, and if he leaves the barrier all right he will be very troublesome, after his display at the Christchurch Hunt Club's meeting, where he was narrowly beaten by Royal Saxon. The latter will have a lot of friends. Chelone, Antrim Boy and Don Jose may be the best of the others engaged. The public may select

FIRST SIGHT TABOO BISOX The Concluding Event. The programme will conclude with the Avonhead Handicap, and most of the investments may go on. TRIPAWAY ROYAL LINEAGE HISTORIC The acceptances are: — HIIXTERS' HURDLE RACE of 250bovs. One mile and three-quarters.
