NEW TRAFFIC LINK.
FORT AND SHORTXAND STS. FURTHER NEGOTIATIONS. The High Street extension, which has been the subject of lengthy negotiations between the Auckland City Council and the Government, was discussed yesterday with the Prime Minister by the Mayor, Mr. G. Bail don, who, in company with Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the Tramways and Waterworks Committee, and the town clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, made a visit to Wellington. Regarding the discussion, Mr. Baildon said to-day that it had taken place in private and he could not communicate anything. He recalled that during the past six months improvements had been taking place, in High Street and adjacent thoroughfares which made it essential that the question of an outlet through the Shortland Street post office site to Fort Street should be decided. The congestion of traffic in this part of the city had long made the provision of such an outlet a matter of urgency. The widening and concreting of High Street had been completed, continued Mr. Baildon, and it was necessary that a right-of-way should be provided in order to divert traffic from Queen Street. The widening had greatly improved the street for business purposes, and considerable re-building had taken place. The cost of the city's improvements had been £3000.
