PETERWAH TAKES BIG STAKE Maxegin's Introductory^—Sahib Scores In Saddle. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The Grand National week racing and trotting carnival was ushered.in to-day, when the N.Z. Metropolitan Club opened its three days.' meeting at Addington. It will be continued on Wednesday, and concluded on Friday. There is a bumper attendance. The track .is- in tip-top order.

Merry Bingen was scratched for the Introductory Handicap. The MaxegjnKatute bracket was a hot favourite, with Great Change as second choice. Maxegin went to the front at the start, and at the end of two furlongs had opened out a gap of ten lengths from Sarsaparilla, who was a similar distance in front of Nelson McKinney. With half the journey gone Maxegin was six lengths in front of Nelson McKinney, who was a length in front of Sarsaparilla, while Young Carbine, Wild Hebe and Nourmahal were next. Maxegin held his place to the end, winning easily by 12 lengths. Nelson McKinney broke three furlongs from home, and though he got going again, Nourmahal beat him for second place by a length. Sarsaparilla and Young Carbine were together, three lengths further back. Times: 3.29 2-5, 3.27 1-5, 3.28 2-5. The Mile Saddle. Loch Moigh and King Pointer were scratched for the Electric Handicap, for which Tommy Direct, Sahib and Parkwood were evenly backed. Parkwood took charge at the start from Brutus, Sahib and Succession, while at the end of two furlongs Pointalena and General Bingen also joined in. Half a mile from Home Brutus ran to the front, closely followed by Parkwood, General Bingen and Sahib. On reaching the straight Sahib ran into second place, and after a good finish beat Brutus by half a head. Succession was three lengths away, while two lengths further back were Parkwood, General Bingen, and Darknite in a bunch. Times. 2.14 1-5, 2.14 2-5, 2.15 1-5. The Star Event. Tom Thumb was the only scratching in the August Handicap. Gold Jacket was a strong favourite, while after him Peter Biagen and Zenith were best backed. Roi Cole and Peter Swift failed to get going at the start, while Gold Jacket broke soon after the commencement. Talent was in front for two furlongs, when Zenith headed him, with Daphne d'Oro, Harold Thorpe and Pluto handy. Passing the stand Peterwah joined Zenith and Talent in the lead, with Daphne d'Oro heading the others. Going along the back, Zenith was just I showing out from Talent, Peterwah and Daphne d'Oro, with Peter Bingen, Pluto and Harold Thorpe not far away. Starting on the last .lap, Zenith, Peterwah and Peter Bingen were a length in front of Talent and Daphne d'Oro, and the order underwent little change when the back straight was reached. Peterwah then drew clear, and three furlongs from home he was followed by Daphne d'Oro and Peter Bingen, with Zenith dropping back. Daphne d'Oro challenged the leader on reaching the straight, but in a great finish Peterwah drew out in the last few strides., to win by a neck. Queen's Own, who finished fast, was three lengths away, half a length in front of Jewel Pointer, who came with a late rattle to beat Peter Bingen by a length. Times: 4.23 4-5, 4.26, 4.22 4-5.
