EVE AND THE SERPENT.

ANCIENT MONUMENT FOUND IN

JERUSALEM.

Excavations which are being conducted by Dr. E. T. F. AUright, of the American Bchool of Archaeology in Jerusalem, with the co-operation of Professor M. G. Kyle, of the Xenia Theological Seminary of America, have been rewarded at the last moment by the discovery of a unique object of worship illustrating Canaanitish worship in the pre-Israelite period. This monument consists of a limestone stela (upright slab) 12in by 24in, depicting a figure (the head of which is lacking), probably of a god or goddess. The limbs of the statue are encircled by a huge eerpent. The stela was discovered within the ruins of wliat had been probably a temple, which it will be impossible fully to excavate this season. Profesosr Kyle suggest? that the object relates to the Garden of Eden story, which deteriorated into serpent worship and emerged later among the Israelites at the time cof Hezekiah.
