CASCADING TO WASTE.

MILLIONS OF GALLONS. WATERFALLS AT DAMS. WAITAKERE RANGES IN FLOOD. Big floods occurred during the weekend in the Waitakere Ranges. Great volumes of water poured over the spillways of both the Auckland City Council's reservoirs, at Nihotupu and Waitakere. "Notwithstanding the heavy weather there have been no slips in the ranges and the catchment areas are quite firm and undamaged," said Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the Water Committee of the City Council, to-day. He said that, on Sunday morning, water was going over the new spillway at Waitakere to a depth of fifteen inches, which represented an exceptional flood. As the water cascaded into the valley below it made a beautiful sight, and formed a torrent on its rocky bed, where three months ago there was scarcely a trickle. In the Nihotupu area, at the head of the reservoir, there was a bank to bank flow in the creek, representing millions of gallons an hour. Both reservoirs have been overflowing for some weeks.
