WHISKY STILLS.
NOTORIOUS IN SOUTHLAND.
ENORMOUS LOSS OF REVENUE HEAVY FIXES IMPOSED. (By Telegraph— Tress Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day. At the Police Court to-day Duncan Alexander Stuart was charged with being unlawfully in possession of a still at Otapiri Gorge and unlawfully making spirits. Accused, who pleaded guilty, was fined £45(1 on the first charge and £f>o on the second. James Robertson, similarly charged in connection with a still found at Awarua Bay, was fined £.">0 on each of two charges. The Collector of Customs said the making of whisky had been notorious in Southland for the last fifty years, and estimated the loss to the Government during that period at tens of thousands of pounds. He stressed the fact that spirits were manufactured wholesale, and even offered for sale in Dunedin. Both of the accused were relatives of the Macßaes. who were fined four years aero for running a ill at Sprinsrhills. On the night previous to Stuart's arrest 20 £rallon« of spirits were sold at Hed;;o hope at £■- a gallon.
