OFFENCES WHILE AT LIBERTY.

SEVERAL "BREAKINGS" ADMITTED. HOW HE WAS CAPTURED. r TO BE SENTENCED AT AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. Seven charges were made against John Leslie Buckley (alias Herbert Leslie Buckley, alias Thompson, alias Le Fresgne), the prisoner who escaped from Mount Eden Prison, when he appeared on remand before Mr. Page, in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Buckley admitted stealing a varied assortment of articles. He told one of his victims he regretted having caused him inconvenience. Chief Detective Ward conducted the prosecution. The first charges dealt with were those of breaking and entering by day the house of Joseph William Michael Smith, and stealing a wallet and gloves, valued at £2; breaking and entering by day the house of John Smallie Tennant, and stealing a diamond and sapphire ring, a gold watch, and a cheque book, a £1 note, and silver, a camera and case, an attache case, a suit of pyjamas, torch, tin of powder, and a singlet, valued at £35 13/; also breaking and entering by day the house of Charles Clabburn and stealing two ties, a cigarette box, valued at £3. Mr. Tennant, a retired professor, said that on July 16 he left his house about 7.45 p.m. When he returned about 0.45 p.m. he found the house had been broken into, entrance having been effected by raising a window that bad been left closed, but unlocked. Buckley told the magistrate that he had no questions to ask Mr. Tennant. "I can only say that I am sorry for causing him all this inconvenience." Joseph Smith and Charles Clabburn gave evidence concerning thefts from their houses, which had been I entered by the windows being broken. Detective McLennan stated in evidence that accused was arrested in a second-hand dealer's shop in Willis Street at 4.30 p.m., on July 17, by Detective Jarrold. Witness assisted •Jarrold. On Btickely's arrival at the police station, the watch, ring, and cheque book, since identified by Mr. Tennant, were found in Buckley's possession. Other stolen property was recovered from a second-hand dealer's shop in Manners Street, and in accused's room in a house in Mulgrave Street. Accused pleaded guilty to three charges and was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence. On a charge of being an incorrigible rogue, in that on May 25 he escaped from Mount Eden Prison before the expiration of his sentence, accused was remanded to appear at Auckland on Friday. Buckley intimated that he intended to plead not guilty to this alleged offence, and elected to be tried by jury. Accused pleaded guilty to the theft of an automatic pistol and ring valued at £10, a bicycle valued at £3 10/, the property of Leonard Francis Yewen, another bicycle valued at £4, the property of Chester Wellington Bollard. Chief Detective Ward said that on October 29, 1025. Buckley was sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour, and was declared an habitual criminal. He escaped from prison on May 25 last, when he hd served approximately 2* years of his sentence. On each of the three summary charges Buckley was sentenced to four months' imprisonment. the sentences to be served concurrently with hi~ present sentence.
