WAIKATO'S RAPID RISE.
SOME FLOODING AT MERCER. ROAD TRAFFIC NOT AFFECTED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) MERCER, this day. The Waikato River continues to rise rapidly, and a vast extent of the countryside has now been flooded. At the Mercer wharf measurements show that th« river is rising an inch an hour, and this rate has been maintained for the past 20 hours. It should slacken off soon, however, unless the downpour upcountry has been heavier than is known. The "timber mill at Mercer has been closed, as the flood water has invaded the works. Thanks to the improvement recently made to the road, motor traffic has not, been affected, and is not likely to be inconvenienced unless the river rises much higher than it is at present. It is reported that part of the road at Rangiriri is flooded. The Mercer railway yards have been invaded by flood water, which has covered some of the lower sets of rails. A Post and Telegraph gang encamped by the roadside near Whangamarino Bridge found the floor boards of their tents covered with water this morning, and to-day thev rescued their belongings and established a fresh camp on higher ground.
