OBITUARY.
OLD WHANGAREI RESIDENT. MRS. JAMES WHITELAW. The death is announced of Mrs. James Whitelaw, one of the oldest residents »f the Whangarei district. Mrs. White* law was 89 years of age, and had been failing for the past few weeks. She had lived in the North for over fifty years, formerly at Kamo, and more recently in the town of Whangarei, where her death occurred. Mrs. Whitelaw came out to New Zealand in 1864 by the ship Silver Eagle, and lived in Auckland with her father, the late Mr. Robert Frater, until going North in the early 'seventies. She married James Whitelaw, and lived at Kamo until the death of her husband 22 years ago. She was well known in the district, and her home was the centre of social life for many years. "A more cheery old soul and a keener sense of humour are seldom met with," said one of her old friends to-day. "She always kept herself right up to date in regard to affairs of the day, and subscribed regularly to several English newspapers. Her memory was wonderful, and she was a most healthy and active woman." Mrs. Whitelaw is survived by her son, Matthew WhiMaw, of Waitangi, Bay of Islands; by her three daughters, Mrs. B. McKenzie, of Auckland, Mrs. Henry Hall, of Devonport, and Miss J. Whitelaw, of Whangarei; and by five grandchildren and two great grand-children. Her only surviving brother is Mr. William Frater, of Auckland. The firm of Frater Bros., of this city, are hrr nephews.
MR. D. B. STEWART.
An old resident of Papakura, Mr. Douglas Brown Stewart, died on Thursday, aged 61 years. He was born at Papakura, and for 40 years worked in Auckland. For eight year* he was a member of the Papakura Town Board, and filled'the position of chairman for one term. He also served on the school committee, and belonged to the Masonic Order, Scottish Constitution. He is survived by his wife, eight son* and seven daughters.
