THE FLOWER GARDEN. The digging, manuring and general overhaul of herbaceous borders should be proceeded with. This can be done when the weather prevents other workSee that the positions of all bulbs and plants are plainly marked before the old stems or tops are removed. The edge of the lawns around the beds and paths should be trimmed. Either give a good rolling or tread them firmly before cutting. Hedges should be cut and all weeds and rubbish cleaned out from underneath. Shrubs and trees can be transplanted. In some cases- it is better to cut them out, give the ground a thorough digging and manuring, and plant some new ones. Climbing and Pillar Roses should be thinned out, and the branches left tied up to their supports. Protect Sweet Peas with small twiggy branches. Keep the small growths off the soil, even if it means tying them up to small sticks Hand weeding of Anemones and other spring flowering plants will be necessary. Any digging and trenching that is waiting should be put in hand as soon as possible. The ground for Peas should be prepared at once. The seed can be sown once the soil is workable. Weed autumn sown Onions. If mildew appears spray with lime sulphur solution. The ground for early Potatoes can be prepared now in many gardens where it is advisable to put out a row or two. Heavy, wet, or cold soils are best left for a time. Plant Shallots, Garlic and Potato Onions. These require quite as good a soil as the ordinary Onion. Go over the seed boxes, labels and stakes, repair and put them in order spring work. Fruit tree pruning and spraying should be' done as soon as possible. Clean up and burn all prunings, and choose a fine day for spraying. Fruit tree planting can be done now. Bush fruits, such as Raspberries, Currants, etc., should be planted as soon as possible. Clean away and bury all weeds the fruit trees; these weeds and rubbish are a harbour for pests.
