If there is a good deal of mud on the .shoes wa-h it off thoroughly with a i piece of sponge dipped in warm water t j then pat the shoes as dry a-s you car jjjwirh a soft duster, and smooth out the , | -oh; lining if it has got rucked up. J Next fill the shoes with smallish bit; fof crumpled-up newspaper, stuffing the well and building up the paper in-!-;-tep as high as possible with the strap ir-fastened over. ilj Apply a good coating of polish and ( ] allow it to sink into the leather. n' Drying and Polishing. "i The shoes are best left to dry gradually in a warm room, well away from 7; the fire. Renew the paper once oi " twice, if necessary; it is surprising how ' J , much of the inside dampness it will absorb. ■ ' When the shoes are nearly dry, polish gently until their glo6s is restored. :l | Pale leathers will often stain badly, .but sometimes the marks can be ene < tirely removed by carefully sponging j. with warm soapy water, then rinsing the soap off with plain water. 1 Dry slowly, then apply polishing t i cream.
