Native Prince, who looks a much better horse than when he raced at the winter meeting, has been doing a lot of work without the hopples. The son of Native King is a speedy customer, and will be a handy one to have to the team going South for the August meeting at Christchurch. The presence of Nelson Bingen at Mangero will be appreciated by owners of brood mares seeking a proved sire to mate with their mares. The -Americanbred horse has a great record, and is the sire of many of the Dominion's best. For the season just closing he heads the list of living sires in the Dominion's trotting sport. Except that J. Shaw is keeping his team going pending his departure for Addington, and L. McMahon is also busy with Gold Jacket, there is little else doing at Epsom these times. Several trainers have novices pottering about, but they are not being asked to go fast, and until the opening of the season draws near there is not likely to be anything sensational done on the tracks. L. McMahon has every reason to be satisfied with the manner in which Gold Jacket is doing his work. The black gelding is now among the good ones, but he is capable of holding his end up even in the best company. During the week he worked out a mile and a-half with Jewel Pointer, and over the last h&lf-mile the speed was right on, and the pair finished up their job in fine style. A. Bryce, who has driven Gold Jacket eo well in his engagements, will hold the reins again at Christchurch. Owners and trainers are emphatic in their opinion that something should be done to have a better arrangement of the country fixtures in Auckland. The fact that horses now have to qualify for the more important meetings of the Auckland and Otahuhu Clubs means that the only opportunities they have of doing so are supplied by the country fixtures, but these are not going to be of much use if the country clubs do not hold their gatherings until after all but one of the Auckland and Otahuhu meetings have been decided. It is to be hoped that some arrangement which will suit owners and trainers better will be in operation in future. Western King has been bowling along in rare style in his work, and twice this week the bay horse was strapped up and sent along with pace right on. Although beaten in the fast mile at the winter meeting he was the unlucky horse of the race, and lost about five lengths at the start. Even then he went a slashing good race, and was one of the bunch who swept over the line in a row at the end. Since then he has been given plenty of exercise, and appears to have sharpened up well, and on Thursday he went a smart workout over a mile and a-half. All going well Western King will get in the money at Addington.
