The second League representative game of the season will be played on Carlaw Park to-morrow, when the Auckland thirteen will be called on to defend the Northern Union Challenge Cup against a strong Canterbury side. The local men recently recaptured the coveted trophy from South Auckland with comparative ease, but the indica tions are that they will be extended to their utmost by the Southerners, whi displayed good form in practice yesterday. C6MINION COUNCIL. —— REFEREES FOR ENGLISH MATCHES Members of the New Zealand Rugby League Council met last evening, Mr. C. A. Snedden presiding. Considerable discussion took place concerning the appointment of referees for the English matches. Mr. W. Liversidge suggested that a sub-committee should be formed to consider the qualifications of the referees nominated. The opinion of Mr. R. Sterling was that the New Zealand Referees' Association should make recommendations to the council, and this view was shared by Mr. W. Murray, who remarked that the referees had been ignored in the matter of appointments. It was finally decided to submit the names of the referees to the Referees' Association for consideration. The Prime Minister advised that he would be pleased to extend an official welcome to the English League team on its arrival at Wellington. The West Coast League advised that an area of about ten acres had been purchased at Greymouth, and matches would shortly be played there. The Radio Broadcasting Company advised that it was intended to relay the. Test matches between England and New Zealand. Mr. L. Bull was appointed referee for the North and South Island match, to be played at Auckland on July 28.

STARS OF THE SOUTH.

A STRONG COMBINATION. Followers of the League code in Auckland may be assured that the South Island thirteen to meet the North at Auckland is a very fine combination of Southern talent, which should this season worthily demonstrate the fact that the League game is nationally well entrenched. The backs chosen show a due regard for speed and provision for strong defence. Blazey, the full-back, is the young Christchurch player who has been a tower of strength to the Pacific Club seniors at Dunedin since he made his appearance this season. He is a strong runner, a splendid kick, and generally a versatile man in any rearguard. Clydesdale and EckhofT play in the City Club, Dunedin, and should go well together. The former is a clever footballer. In the annual Rugby match between Addington Railway (Christchurch) and Hillside Workshops (Dunedin) Clydesdale regularly takes his place in the Otago fifteen. However, he prefers the more scientific League play. He is a tricky runner and has a safe pair of hands and a ready toe.

Eckhoff was in the trial games at Auckland for the 1027 All Blacks, and had hard luck in missing the trip. Though not fast, he is agile and a brainy player, with plenty of determined dash and a penchant for defence—a kingpin at centre. Davidson, a popular Christchurch player, has earned a reputation for his ability as a scoring three-quarter. In Spillane, the brilliant "find" of the Canterbury League, and Robins, the doyen of the West Coast inside men, the South has a rare pair of five-eighths, who will be well served by a very outstanding half in Woods. In Woodgate, the hefty Hornby forward, Collie, another fine type of player, and Townsend (late of Auckland, and still playing wonderful football in Otago), the Southerners' pack has a sound front row. Auckland will again see that remarkably fast and weighty player. Tom O'Connor, whose exhibition last year with the Otago team pleased local fans. 1 Goodall, one of the most dangerous forwards of the West Coast teams, and his confrere in the scrum. O'Brien {the name somehow seems to suggest forward superiority), will complete a rugged set of Rugby "giants" (the term is borrowed from South Africa). Stuart, of Canterbury, is the emergency back- It says a great deal for the merit of the rear division when a player of his calibre is held as reserve. Quinn, the spare forward, is one of tlie redoubtables of the unbeaten Christian Bros, team in Otago. A general review of the South Island thirteen shows a very studied collaboration by discerning selectors. The North will be kept quite busy in looking to its laurels when the 11V28 inter-Island match opens at Carlaw Park.
